Miss D loves having the studio participate in Dance Benefits. She loves sharing her passion and love of dance to others, and the fact of doing it for a great cause makes it even closer to heart! Ms D and DK Dance has helped in raising approximately $6000 to local charities in the past couple years and plan to keep increasing that number! Dena is also an adjust lecturer in the SUNY Brockport Dance Department! Wendy Ewin is the office manager as well as Miss Dena's mom! She is a huge part of the success of the DK Dance family. She has been a true supporter of Miss Dena's love for dance ever since she started! Although she doesn't dance or teach, you will still see her creativity on the stage because she is also a seamstress and creates some of our beautiful costumes! Besides helping out at the studio, she also does medical transcription at a doctor's office! She loves taking care of her St. Bernard, "Murphy" and German Shepherd/Husky, "Moki" and Miss D's pugs, Hogan and Savage. You will most likely hear her speak of her beautiful grandaughter and Miss D's neice, Brooklyn Reese. She is definitely a familiar face around DK Dance and we are very grateful she is part of the family! DENA KAY EWIN is the owner and director of DK Dance. It was her dream to open a dance studio, and was proud to open it where she grew up and started dancing at the age of 10. During her high school year she participated in the East Ridge School of Performing Arts program where she studied and performed, singing, dancing and acting the second half of the school day. After graduating from Webster High School, she continued her dance education at SUNY Brockport followed by the University of Buffalo where she received her BA in Dance and her MA in humanities with a dance and education emphasis. Her focus of her studies was dance and its relationship to childhood development, which she implements in the studio programs. She taught dance at many studios in the Buffalo and Rochester areas as well as at University of Buffalo during her masters studies. She has taught and choreographed all disciplines and ages of dance, both competitive, recreational, and professional. She choreographed for the Zodiaque Studio Dance Ensemble, Absolute Dance Company, Young Choreographers Showcase and was assistant choreographer for Les Miserables and Guys and Dolls. Most recently Dena was so excited to get involved in the Webster community when she was asked to choreograph Webster Thomas High Schools musical, Pippin in 2008! In 2009, she choreographed Brigadoon and in 2010 You will see her choreography again in Webster Thomas' musical, Bye Bye Birdie!
Miss D frequently attends dance conventions with the DK Dance Performance Team to keep up with the latest dance styles and techniques and to keep the dancers motivaed and educated. This past year Dena and her students attended workshops in Buffalo. She is certified by test to teach through Dance Masters of America's Teachers Training Program. She values her dance education and the process of learning immensely and utilizes that in the classroom. Dena has also adjudicated for Footloose Talent Competitions and Mohawk Valley Talent Competitions, and American Dance Awards.
Kilmyn Shae Graf is new to the DK Dance faculty and we are so excited she will be a part of DK Dance! Kilmyn Shae is a graduate from the State University of New York, at Brockport. She recently earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Modern Dance Performance and Studies. Originally from Oklahoma, Kilmyn discovered her love for dance and choreography ten years ago as a scholarship recipient at the Oklahoma Institute for Young Artist. Throughout her studies, she has also been awarded scholarships at Alvin Ailey Dance Conservatory and the Jose Limon Summer School. She currently lives in Rochester, New York and is a member of the Kista Tucker Dance Company. Over the last two years, she has independently maintained her own clothing apparel business, managed a full-time academic schedule, and worked as a choreographer. Kilmyn’s education is not solely limited to dance and performance. She maintains a Minor in Theatre Production and Costume Design. Most recently, she traveled abroad to train at the world renowned LABAN School in London. There she worked with everyone from dancers to architects. Kilmyn loves collaborating with other artists. In addition to personal growth, she finds these experiences extremely enlightening. She is very excited to share her love and passion for dance to the students at DK Dance!
Lindsay LaGreca is returning to the DK Dance family as a dance instructor for the fifth year! Lindsay grew up dancing at the Dance Spectrum in Buffalo, NY, where she has danced for 13 years. She is a well-rounded dancer/choreographer/teaching with her training in jazz, tap, ballet, lyrical, acrobatics, hip-hop, and pointe. Lindsay was part of the Company Performance Team for 10 years where she, along side Miss Justine, performed and competed both locally and nationally. Lindsay has won numerous awards and scholarships as a performer from New York City Dance Alliance, Star Systems, West Coast Dance Explossion, Tremaine, and Jump. She has also been recognized for her outstanding choreography. Lindsay continues to grow as an educator and dancer as she attends numerous conventions through-out the year locally, and across the states. She is attending SUNY Brockport pursuing her degree in Physical Therapy where she dances for the Brockport Dance Team!
Susan Meynadasy (Stretch of the Imagination) Susan is a registered Yoga Trainer. She has been active in the yoga community for over 15 years and bringing the benefits of yoga to others for 3 years. Stretch of the Imagination embraces a flowing, heat building style of yoga. This energetic practice builds strength and flexibility in both body and mind. While energetic, these classes are appropriate for all levels of ability. Students are encouraged to move at their own pace as they develop body awareness. Susan also instructs the DK Dance performance team in yoga and we are grateful to have her teaching yoga here for the 3rd year!
Jill Ross is returning for a second year as a dance instructor at DK Dance! but is a long time friend of Miss Dena! Jill is a 2002 graduate of SUNY Brockport, majoring in Dance and Business. With over twenty years experience in dance she has earned many local and national honors. She has been able to perform in the Nutcracker Ballet numerous times with the Pittsburgh, Moscow and Flower City Ballets, with the opportunity to perform both in the choral pieces as well as a featured soloist! With the keen urge to always broaden her dance knowledge she continues to frequent New York City to attend master classes in all disciplines. She has had the privilege of working with and dancing for many of today's top choreographers.
Wanting to pass on the love for dance, Jill began teaching in 1991 at Donna F. Smith School of Dance. She teaches most forms of dance including tap, ballet, lyrical, jazz and tap for all ages and levels. In her first year as a choreographer, she took home top honors from 3 major competitions for creativeness and style!
Jill is a mother of 3, 2 of which are dancing at DK Dance! After being with the Donna F. Smith School of Dance for 15 years, she looks ahead to all the new people she will meet as she continues her journey at DK Dance.
AMANDA SPRIGGS is returning to DK Dance for a second year! She is a 2004 graduate of the University at Buffalo where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. As a dance major, she performed and choreographed in several dance concerts. She also assisted some of the professors as well as Miss. Dena in teaching the beginning level classes. After college Amanda moved to New York City where she interned at Broadway Dance Center in order to work closely with many of their teachers and choreographers. While taking classes and auditioning, Amanda choreographed and performed in several concerts to benefit charities such as The Make- A- Wish Foundation. Though she enjoyed the city, after discovering that they were expecting their first child, Amanda and her husband decided to come back to their roots in Rochester and begin this new phase of life. She is very excited to be teaching at DKDance this year and is looking forward to learning and growing with the DKDance family.
MARCIA VANDERLEE is excited to be returning the staff of DK Dance for a second year. She is will be pursuing her Masters at Brockport in the fall! She was accepted in the American Dance Festival in North Carolina, where she will dance all summer! Marcia is a recent graduate of the College at Brockport State University of New York. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in the dual majors of, Physical Education and Dance. She holds memberships with the following professional organizations; National Dance Education Organization, NYSAPHERD (New York State Association For Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, Inc., and Phi Epsilon Kappa Fraternity (National Honor Society for Physical Education).
Marcia is a native of Webster, NY. She grew up studying dance at Dance 22. Marcia was one of the few students to be chosen to participate in the ProBowl Extravaganza is Honolulu, Hawaii. During her high school days she was an athlete for the Webster Varsity Gymnastics team where she shared the responsibility of being captain for the team her senior year and was honored with the team sportsmanship award.
For the past eight years Marcia has been a gymnastics coach for Northern Hemisphere Gymnastics in Webster. She has not only taught students the fundamentals of gymnastics, but has also instructed the students on how to water-ski. Marcia is one of the head coaches for the Adventure camp that is available in the summer months.
At Brockport, Marcia has performed for many undergraduate and graduate choreographers. She is currently a drummer for the Sankofa African Drum and Dance Ensemble. While at Brockport she was involved in a numerous amount of performances opportunities including three thesis graduate works presented by Kylee Pike, Jenny Showalter, and Molly Christie in Dance Hartwell, BodiesSoundDiaologue concert, Image Movement Sound (RIT Campus), and various graduate/undergraduate compositional works.
Marcia has also had her work presented at various conferences. Her solo piece she choreographed BreakThrew was presented at a conference held at Cornell University and the National Conference of Undergraduate Research at Salisbury University in Maryland. Marcia's work was also nominated for the American College Dance Festival. Currently, Marcia is working towards her masters at SUNY Brockport.
Marcia is excited to be teaching back in the community were she grew up. She has much to offer the dance world and is excited to give the knowledge she has learned to the young ones coming up! She cannot wait to begin her experience her with DK Dance and we are SO excited to have her!
